Mountain skills courses 2010

The Mountain Skills Scheme aims to teach hill-walkers the skills required to look after themselves in the Irish Mountains. The course provides training in the basic skills required to carry out hill-walking competently, safely and enjoyably. Aspects of navigation, equipment, safety and mountain hazards are covered.

Our next MS1 course is 10/11 April in Kerry, next MS2 is Galway 10/11 April.

Please find list of Mountain skills dates and booking forms attached for both MS1 and MS2. Let us know again which date would suit and can provisionally hold a place till booking form arrives.


MS1: This course includes map-reading and simple navigation techniques, recognition of natural features, distance measurement and timing of walks. Mountain hazards are also covered, as is personal equipment such as correct clothing and emergency equipment.

Cost:

- non-residential 145 euro

- residential 185 euro (1 night) 225 euro (2 nights) per person sharing.

New decade, new race. Irish Adventures are proud to announce the ‘Dingle Adventure Race’, which will be held on 12th June 2010.

It is a one day Multi Activity Adventure Race consisting of Bike, Hike, Run and Kayak. The 26 mile/ 42km course will take you to some of the gems of the Dingle peninsula, biking over the Conor Pass, Ireland’s highest mountain pass, following in the footsteps of St Brandon climbing Irelands second highest Mountain range Mt Brandon, running country roads of the peninsula and kayaking across Dingle Harbour. Why do a winter skills course?

This course is ideal to give an introduction to winter walking, how to look after yourself safely in mountainous areas of Ireland and UK during winter conditions, while under supervision of experienced and qualified instructors.


Benefits of winter skills

When the snow comes in the winter many people get very excited, the scenery is amazing with snow covered peaks, but the most important question to ask yourself is can you deal with the condition in winter? Do you have the proper equipment and more importantly do you have the knowledge and skills to use this equipment? Winter skills will build your skills to be able to make safe decisions while winter walking.


Contents of a winter skills course

4 full days covering many aspects of winter walking and winter skills. From walking up and down steep slopes in crampons to ice axe arresting yourself down a snow slope, digging a snow hole, judging if a slope is safe to walk across or is there an avalanche risk involved. During the course these skills will be passed on to you while enjoying some of the best winter walks that Highlands of Scotland has to offer, including Ben Nevis circuit, Glencoe and the Cairngorms. Technician equipment provided, helmet, harness, ice-axe and crampons. Luxury chalets wait you in the evening to relax and recharge the batteries.


Requirements for a Winter skills course

Have previous hill walking experience and hillwalking equipment, average to good fitness (5-6 hour hillwalks) and a good sense of humor.

Winter Mountaineering Course

If you have already completed a winter skills course or have experience in winter skills and would like to progress then this is the course for you. This course will give you both skills and experience for technical winter mountaineering, beginning with climbs on some classic winter routes over the weekend. You will learn how to climb with two ice axes, place gear, make belays and climb together. During the course you will have the opportunity to climb some of the classic routes in Scotland, such as Ledge Route, Ben Nevis.

Half and Full Days

Our sea kayaks comprise a new fleet of 14 ft (4.4m) long Necky Manitou 14s and Zoar Sports. These are extremely comfortable, with great back support and padded seats. They have drop down skegs or rudders. We also have bigger Necky Kyooks and Necky Narpas (5m/ 17ft) for long-distance kayaking.

Enjoy a half-day's sea kayaking in Dingle Harbour, see Fungi the Dolphin at the mouth of the harbour and explore some of the many sea caves. This trip is available to all - beginners to advanced paddlers. Although not physically demanding, it provides a great introduction to sea kayaking, covering basic kayaking skills.

Sunrise & Sunset Sea-Kayaking Easy
Experience the peaceful waters of Dingle Harbour and Dingle Bay at their most tranquil at the beginning and end of the day. This trip is available to all - beginners to advanced paddlers. It is not arduous but as well as visiting Fungi and sea caves, it also covers basic kayaking skills.

Explore the Lakes of Killarney by kayak. This trip starts at Ross Castle, visiting Bronze Age copper mines and includes the option to visit the 6th century monastic site on Innisfallen Island.

Kayak from Dunmore Head, the most westerly point of Ireland and Europe across the Blasket Sound to the isolated, abandoned Great Blasket Island.
